Jerónimos Monastery Tickets Lisbon 2026: Book Entry Online

Updated: September 2026

Autumn tip: the monastery is significantly quieter from October onward. Weekday mornings in September and October see ticket desk queues of under 20 minutes, versus the two-hour waits common in July and August.

Walk-up visitors buying tickets on the day at Jerónimos Monastery can wait over two hours in the queue outside during peak season. Online booking eliminates that wait: you scan your code, enter through the ticket-holder line, and you’re inside the cloisters within minutes of arrival.

Worth knowing: the church itself is free to enter and always worth seeing, even without a ticket. The ticket covers the cloisters, the refectory, and the chapter house, and that’s where the real architectural highlight is. If you visit and the ticket queue looks impossible, the free church visit stands on its own.

Important: free entry on the first Sunday of every month

Jerónimos Monastery is free to visit on the first Sunday of each month. If your Lisbon trip includes that date, plan accordingly, but expect heavier crowds, and the ticket queue for the cloisters even on free days can still be long. For any other visit, booking ahead is the most reliable way to avoid a significant wait.

Which ticket should you book?

Standard tickets covering the cloisters, refectory, and chapter house are available through GetYourGuide, Tiqets, Musement, and Headout. Prices range from €12 to €19.50 depending on the platform. The core experience is identical across all options; the difference is price, cancellation policy, and any bundled extras.

For first-time visitors, a standard timed entry is enough. The monastery is self-guided, and the space is extraordinary on its own terms. Allow at least 90 minutes inside. Visit the lower church first to see the ornate tombs of Vasco da Gama and Luís de Camões, then move into the cloisters.

Combining with Torre de Belém

The monastery is 10 minutes on foot from Torre de Belém. Most visitors pair the two in a single Belém morning: the tower from 09:30, the monastery from 11:00. The Lisbon city guide covers the full picture, including the Oceanário de Lisboa if you want to add an afternoon across the city.
